En geniş anlamda doğa, doğal, fiziksel veya maddi dünyaya veya evrene eşdeğerdir. "Doğa", fiziksel dünyanın olgusuna ve genel olarak hayatın durumuna atıfta bulunur. Doğanın anlamı, Latince natura sözcüğünden ya da "temel nitelikler, doğuştan doğuş" türetilmiştir ve antik zamanlarda kelimenin tam anlamıyla "doğum" anlamına geliyordu.
