Occam'ın usturası, Ockham'ın William tarafından geliştirilen problem çözmede kullanılan kısırlaştırma, ekonomi ya da kısalık ilkesidir. Rakip hipotezlerin arasında, en az varsayımı olanın seçilmesi gerektiği belirtilmektedir. Diğer, daha karmaşık çözümler sonuçta doğru olduğunu ispatlayabilir, ancak kesin olmaması durumunda daha az varsayım yapılırsa o kadar iyi olur. İlkenin uygulanması sıklıkla ispat yükünü bir tartışmada değiştirir. Tıracı, basitlik daha açıklayıcı güç için işlem görene kadar basit teorilere ilerlemelidir.
