Poliüretan
Poliüretan, karbamat bağlantıları ile birleştirilmiş organik birimler zincirinden oluşan bir polimerdir. Çoğu poliüretan, ısıtıldığında erimeyen ısıyla sertleşen polimerler olmakla birlikte, termoplastik poliüretanlar da mevcuttur. Poliüretan polimerler geleneksel olarak ve en yaygın olarak bir di- ya da poliizosiyanatın bir poliol ile reaksiyona sokulmasıyla oluşturulmaktadır. Poliüretanlar yapmak için kullanılan hem izosiyanatlar hem de polioller, molekül başına ortalama olarak iki veya daha fazla işlevsel grup içerir. Polisüretanları sentezlemek için izosiyanatların kullanımını en aza indirmeye yönelik kayda değer yeni çabalar, çünkü izosiyanatlar ciddi toksisite sorunlarına yol açmaktadır. Sigara izosiyanat esaslı poliüretanlar son zamanlarda sağlık ve çevre sorunlarını hafifletmek için yeni bir poliüretan polimeri sınıfı olarak geliştirildi. Poliüretan ürünleri genellikle "üretanlar" olarak adlandırılır, ancak üretan olarak da bilinen etil karbamat ile karıştırılmamalıdır. Poliüretanlar etil karbamatı içermez ve etil karbamattan üretilmez.
