Felsefede, potansiyel ve gerçeklik, Aristoteles'in Fizik, Metafizik, Etik ve De Anima bölümünde hareket, nedensellik, etikoloji ve fizyoloji analizinde kullandığı bir ikilemin ilkeleridir. Bu bağlamda, potansiyel kavramı, genellikle, bir şeyin sahip olduğu söylenebilecek her "olasılık" ile ilgilidir. Aristoteles, tüm olasılıkları aynı düşünmüyordu ve koşullar doğru olduğunda hiçbir şeyin söz konusu olmadığı durumlarda kendi kararlarına uyacaklarını vurguladı. Olasılığın aksine, gerçeklik, bir olasılık tam anlamıyla gerçekleştiğinde, bir olasılığın gerçekleşmesine veya uygulanmasına ilişkin hareket, değişim veya etkinliktir.
