Fidye
Fidye, serbest bırakılmalarını sağlamak için para veya mülkleri zorla çalıştırmak için tutsak veya eşyalar bulundurma ya da ilgili paranın toplamına atıfta bulunma uygulamasıdır. Erken bir Alman yasasında benzer bir kavrama, weregild deniyordu. Fidye "ödeme" anlamına geldiğinde, kelime Latince redemptio = "geri alma" dan Eski Fransız rançon aracılığıyla gelir: "geri ödeme" ni karşılaştırın. Yahudilikte fidye kofer-nefesh olarak bilinir. Diğer kullanımlar arasında, sözcük, nüfus sayımında yirmi yılı aşkın her erkek tarafından ödenmesi gereken bir buçuk şeklin payı vergisine uygulandı.
