Cyperaceae, sedges olarak bilinen, yüzeysel olarak çimenlere veya acele benzeyen monokotiledon graminoid çiçekli bitkiler ailesidir. Ailenin büyüklüğü, yaklaşık 109 cinsde tanımlanan 5.500 türün varlığı, 2.000'den fazla türün Carex cinsi "gerçek sedges" olma özelliği. Bu türler, tropik Asya'da ve tropikal Güney Amerika'da meydana gelen grup için çeşitlilik merkezleri ile yaygın olarak dağıtılır. Sedges hemen hemen tüm çevrelerde büyüyen bulunabilirken, çoğu sulak alanlarla veya zayıf topraklarla ilişkilidir. Kayaçların egemenlik altındaki ekolojik topluluklara sedgelands denir. Sedge ailesinin üyelerini otlardan veya akınlardan ayıran özellikler, üçgen kesit ve spiral olarak üç sıra halinde düzenlenmiş yaprakları olan gövdelerdir. Bazı tanınmış sedgeslerde Eski Kısır yazı malzemesinin yapıldığı su kestaneği ve papirüs sedgesi bulunmaktadır. Bu aile aynı zamanda pamuk çimenleri, başak koşusu, sawgrass, fıstığı veya ceviz otu ve beyaz yıldız sedge içerir.
