Ispanak, Amaranthaceae ailesinde yenilebilir bir çiçekli bitkidir. Orta ve güneybatı Asya'ya özgü. 30 cm'ye kadar çıkabilen yıllık bitki. Ispanak ılıman bölgelerde kış boyunca hayatta kalabilir. Yapraklar alternatif, basit, üçgen tabanlı, yaklaşık 2-30 cm uzunluğunda ve 1-15 cm genişliğinde çok değişken, bitkinin tabanında daha büyük yapraklar ve çiçekli kök üzerinde daha küçük yapraklarla üçgen tabanlı ovattır. Çiçekler 3-4 mm çapında göze çarpmayan, küçük, sert, kuru, topaklı bir meyve grubuna birkaç tane tohum içeren 5-10 mm arasında olgunlaşmayan, sarı-yeşil renktedirler. Yaygın ıspanak olan Spinacia oleracea, Chenopodiaceae familyasında uzun zamandan beri düşünülmüştü, ancak 2003'te Chenopodiaceae ailesi, Caryophyllales sırasıyla Amaranthaceae familyasıyla 'Amaranthaceae' soyadı altında birleşti. Amaranthaceae ailesi içinde Amaranthoideae ve Chenopodioideae sırasıyla amaranths ve chenopodlar için alt ailelerdir.
