У класичній дедуктивній логіці послідовна теорія полягає в тому, що не містить суперечності. Відсутність протиріччя може бути визначена як в семантичному, так і в синтаксичному відношенні. Семантичне визначення говорить, що теорія є послідовною тоді і тільки тоді, коли вона має модель, тобто існує тлумачення, згідно з яким всі формули в теорії є істинними.
