Девальвація в сучасній монетарній політиці - це зменшення вартості валюти по відношенню до тих товарів, послуг або інших грошових одиниць, з якими можна обміняти цю валюту. "Девальвація" означає офіційне зниження вартості валюти країни в рамках системи фіксованого валютного курсу, за допомогою якої грошово-кредитний орган офіційно встановлює нову фіксовану ставку щодо іноземної базової валюти. На відміну від цього, амортизація використовується для опису зниження вартості валюти через ринкові сили, а не дії уряду чи центрального банку. Під другою системою центральні банки підтримують ставки вгору або вниз, купуючи або продаючи іноземну валюту, як правило, але не завжди долари США. Протилежність девальвації називається переоцінкою. Амортизація та девальвація іноді неправильно використовуються взаємозамінно, але вони завжди відносяться до цінностей в інших валютах. Інфляція, з іншого боку, стосується вартості валюти у товарах та послугах. Зміна номінальної вартості валюти без зменшення її обмінного курсу є переоцінкою, а не девальвацією чи переоцінкою.
