Гуру - санскритський термін для "вчителя" або "майстра", особливо в індійських релігіях. Індуїстська гуру-шиши традиція - усна традиція або релігійна доктрина чи досвідова мудрість, передана від вчителя до учня. У Сполучених Штатах слово guru є більш новим терміном, найчастіше використовується для опису вчителя з індуїстської традиції.
