A trăi (sau a se înțelege, a se iubi etc.) ca câinele cu pisica sau a se mânca ca câinii, se spune despre două sau mai multe persoane care nu se înțeleg deloc, nu se pot suferi, se dușmănesc și se ceartă întruna. A tăia frunză la câini = a trândăvi; a nu avea nici o ocupație. A trăi ca câinele la stână = a trăi bine. Nu e nici câine, nici ogar = nu are o trăsătură distinctivă, o situație clară. Nu-i numai un câine scurt de coadă = mai e și altcineva sau altceva de felul celui cu care avem de-a face; caracteristica, aspectul în discuție e comun și altora. Viață de câine = viață grea, plină de lipsuri. (Ir.) Umblă câinii cu covrigi (sau colaci) în coadă = e mare belșug. ♦ Epitet dat unui om rău, hain. 2. Compuse: (pop.) Câinele-Mare = numele unei constelații boreale (din care face parte și Sirius); Câinele-Mic = numele unei constelații boreale, situată între Hidra și Orion; câine-de-mare = rechin de talie mică, de culoare albastră-cenușie, cu câte un spin la aripioarele dorsale (Achanthias vulgaris); câinele-babei = larva unor fluturi de noapte, sub formă de vierme mare și păros, cu un cârlig chitinos la unul dintre capete.
