Aeneid
Die Aeneid ist ein lateinisches episches Gedicht, geschrieben von Virgil zwischen 29 und 19 v. Chr., Das die legendäre Geschichte von Aeneas erzählt, ein Trojaner, der nach Italien reiste, wo er zum Vorfahren der Römer wurde. Es besteht aus 9.896 Linien in dactylic hexameter. Die ersten sechs der zwölf Bücher des Gedichts erzählen die Geschichte von Aeneas Wanderungen von Troja nach Italien, und die zweite Halbzeit des Gedichts erzählt von dem letztlich siegreichen Krieg der Trojaner auf die Lateiner, unter deren Namen Aeneas und seine Trojanischen Anhänger dazu bestimmt sind, subsumiert zu werden. Der Held Aeneas war bereits griechisch-römische Legende und Mythos bekannt, ein Charakter in der Ilias, der im 8. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Komponiert wurde. Virgil nahm die abgetrennten Geschichten von Aeneas Wanderungen, seine vage Vereinigung mit der Gründung von Rom und eine Persönlichkeit von festen Merkmalen außer einer gewissenhaften Pietas, und machte dies zu einem zwingenden Gründungsmythos oder nationalen Epos, die sofort Rom an die Legenden von Troy, erklärte die Punischen Kriege, verherrlichte traditionelle römische Tugenden und legitimierte die Julio-Claudian-Dynastie als Nachkommen der Gründer, Helden und Götter von Rom und Troja.
