Apostasie (əpɒstəsi /; griechisch: ἀποστασία (Apostasie), "eine Defektion oder Revolte") ist die formale Enttäuschung von oder Verzicht oder Verzicht auf eine Religion durch eine Person. Einer, der Abtrünnigkeit begeht (oder wer apostatisiert) ist als Abtrünniger bekannt. Der Begriff Abfall wird von Soziologen verwendet, um Verzicht und Kritik an oder eine Opposition gegen die ehemalige Religion einer Person im technischen Sinne und ohne pejorative Konnotation zu bedeuten. Der Begriff wird gelegentlich auch metaphorisch verwendet, um auf Verzicht auf einen nicht-religiösen Glauben oder eine Ursache, wie eine politische Partei, Hirnvertrauen oder ein Sport-Team zu verweisen. Apostasie ist in der Regel keine Selbstdefinition: Nur wenige ehemalige Gläubige nennen sich Abtrünnige wegen der pejorativen Implikationen des Begriffs. Viele religiöse Gruppen und einige Staaten bestrafen Abtrünnige. Apostaten können von den Mitgliedern ihrer ehemaligen religiösen Gruppe gemieden oder einer formellen oder informellen Strafe unterworfen werden.
