Quader
Ashlar ist fein gekleidetes Mauerwerk, entweder ein einzelner Stein, der bis quadriert gearbeitet wurde, oder das Mauerwerk, das aus solchen Steinen gebaut wurde. Es ist die feinste Steinmauerwerkseinheit, meist quaderförmig oder weniger häufig trapezförmig. Ashlar steht im Gegensatz zu Schuttmauerwerk, das unregelmäßig geformte Steine verwendet, obwohl manchmal minimal gearbeitet oder für eine ähnliche Größe oder beide ausgewählt. Ashlar ist verwandt, aber unterscheidet sich von anderen Steinmauerwerk, das fein gekleidet, aber nicht viereckig ist, wie krummliniges Mauerwerk und polygonales Mauerwerk. Ashlar kann gekreuzt werden, was langwierige horizontale Kurven von parallel geschlagenen Steinblöcken und damit mit durchgehenden horizontalen Fugen beinhaltet.
