In der Pharmakologie ist die Bioverfügbarkeit eine Unterkategorie der Absorption und ist der Bruchteil einer verabreichten Dosis von unverändertem Arzneimittel, das die systemische Zirkulation erreicht, eine der hauptsächlichen pharmakokinetischen Eigenschaften von Arzneimitteln. Wenn jedoch ein Medikament über andere Wege verabreicht wird, verringert sich seine Bioverfügbarkeit im Allgemeinen von Patient zu Patient. Die Bioverfügbarkeit ist eines der wesentlichen Werkzeuge in der Pharmakokinetik, da die Bioverfügbarkeit bei der Berechnung von Dosierungen für nicht intravenöse Verabreichungswege berücksichtigt werden muss. Für Nahrungsergänzungsmittel, Kräuter und andere Nährstoffe, bei denen der Verabreichungsweg fast immer oral ist, bezeichnet die Bioverfügbarkeit im Allgemeinen einfach die Menge oder Fraktion der aufgenommenen Dosis, die absorbiert wird. Die Bioverfügbarkeit ist für Drogen im Gegensatz zu Nahrungsergänzungsmitteln in erster Linie aufgrund der Verabreichungsmethode und der Verordnung über Lebensmittel und Arzneimittelverordnung etwas anders definiert. Die Biozugänglichkeit ist ein Konzept für die Bioverfügbarkeit im Zusammenhang mit biologischem Abbau und Umweltverschmutzung.
