Biotop
Biotop ist ein Gebiet von einheitlichen Umweltbedingungen, die einen Wohnraum für eine spezifische Zusammenstellung von Pflanzen und Tieren bieten. Biotop ist fast gleichbedeutend mit dem Begriff Lebensraum, der häufiger in englischsprachigen Ländern verwendet wird. Allerdings sind in einigen Ländern diese beiden Begriffe unterschieden: Das Thema eines Lebensraumes ist eine Art oder eine Population, das Thema eines Biotops ist eine biologische Gemeinschaft. Es handelt sich um ein englisches Lehnwort aus dem deutschen "Biotop", das wiederum aus dem griechischen Bios = "Leben" oder "Organismus" und topos = 'Platz' stammte. Das Wort Biotop, buchstäblich übersetzt, bedeutet ein Gebiet, in dem das Leben lebt.
