Kapsel
Ein Capsid ist die Proteinhülle eines Virus. Es besteht aus mehreren oligomeren Strukturuntereinheiten aus Protein namens Protomeren. Die beobachtbaren dreidimensionalen morphologischen Untereinheiten, die einzelnen Proteinen entsprechen können oder nicht, werden als Capsomere bezeichnet. Das Kapsid umschließt das genetische Material des Virus. Kapsiden werden nach ihrer Struktur weitgehend klassifiziert. Die Mehrheit der Viren hat Kapsiden mit entweder helical oder icosahedral Struktur. Einige Viren, wie Bakteriophagen, haben kompliziertere Strukturen aufgrund von Zwängen der Elastizität und Elektrostatik entwickelt. Die ikosaedrische Form, die 20 gleichseitige dreieckige Flächen hat, nähert sich einer Kugel, während die spiralförmige Form zylindrisch ist. Die Kapsidgesichter können aus einem oder mehreren Proteinen bestehen. Zum Beispiel hat das Maul- und Klauenseuche-Virus-Capsid Gesichter, die aus drei Proteinen mit dem Namen VP1-3 bestehen. Einige Viren sind umhüllt, was bedeutet, dass das Capsid mit einer Lipidmembran, die als Virushülle bekannt ist, beschichtet ist.
