Der Katholizismus wird als ein breiter Begriff verwendet, um bestimmte Traditionen in den christlichen Kirchen in Theologie und Lehre, Liturgie, Ethik und Spiritualität zu beschreiben. In diesem Sinne ist es von dem Sinn zu unterscheiden, in dem es Christen und Kirchen, westlichen und östlichen, bezeichnet, die in voller Gemeinschaft mit dem Heiligen Stuhl sind und die gemeinhin als die katholische Kirche oder die römisch-katholische Kirche bezeichnet werden. Im Sinne der Angabe der historischen Kontinuität des Glaubens und der Praxis aus dem ersten Jahrtausend wird der Begriff "Katholizismus" zeitweise angewandt, um einen Kontrast zum Protestantismus zu markieren, der nur auf die Bibel hindeutet, wie sie auf den Prinzipien des 16. Jahrhunderts interpretiert wird Evangelische Reformation als letzter Standard. Es wurde also von der Oxford-Bewegung benutzt.
