Zölibat
Zölibat ist freiwillig unverheiratet, sexuell abstinent oder beides, meist aus religiösen Gründen. Es ist oft in Verbindung mit der Rolle eines religiösen Beamten oder Devotees. Im engeren Sinne wird der Begriff zölibat nur auf diejenigen angewendet, für die der unverheiratete Staat das Ergebnis eines heiligen Gelübdes, eines Verzichtes oder einer religiösen Überzeugung ist. Im weiteren Sinne ist es allgemein verstanden, nur die Abstinenz von sexueller Aktivität zu bedeuten. Das Zölibat existiert in einer oder anderen Form im Laufe der Geschichte, in praktisch allen großen Religionen der Welt, und die Ansichten darüber haben sich verändert. Das alte Judentum war dem Zölibat stark entgegengesetzt. Ebenso sahen die Römer es als eine Abweichung und gesetzgesteuerte Steuerstrafen gegen sie an, mit der einzigen Ausnahme, die den Vestalischen Jungfrauen gewährt wurde. Christen im Mittelalter und vor allem Katholiken glaubten, dass das Zölibat eine Voraussetzung für das religiöse Amt sei. Der Protestantismus sah eine Umkehrung dieser Tendenz im Westen und die östlich-orthodoxe Kirche nahm sie niemals an. Die islamische Einstellung zum Zölibat war auch komplex; Muhammad verurteilte es, aber einige Sufi-Befehle umarmen es.
