Chalcedon / kælsɛdəni / ist eine kryptokristalline Form von Kieselsäure, die aus sehr feinen Zwischenwachsen der Mineralien Quarz und Moganit besteht. Dies sind beide Siliciumdioxid-Mineralien, aber sie unterscheiden sich darin, dass Quarz eine trigonale Kristallstruktur hat, während Moganit monoklin ist. Die chemische Struktur von Chalcedon ist SiO2. Chalcedon hat einen wachsartigen Glanz und kann halbtransparent oder lichtdurchlässig sein. Es kann eine breite Palette von Farben annehmen, aber die am häufigsten gesehen sind weiß bis grau, grau-blau oder ein Schatten von Braun von blass bis fast schwarz. Der Name chalcedony kommt aus dem lateinischen chalcedonius. Der Name erscheint zuerst in Plinius der Ältere Naturalis Historia als Begriff für eine transluzide Art von Jaspis. Der Name stammt vermutlich aus der Stadt Chalcedon in Kleinasien. Ein wenig später erscheint das griechische Wort khalkedon im Buch der Offenbarung. Es ist ein Hapax-Schenkel, ein Wort, das nirgendwo anders gefunden wird, so dass es unmöglich ist zu sagen, ob das kostbare Schmuckstück, das in der Bibel erwähnt wird, das gleiche Mineral ist, das heute von diesem Namen bekannt ist.
