Cornice

Ein Gesims ist in der Regel eine horizontale dekorative Formgebung, die ein Gebäude oder Möbel-Element krönt - das Gesims über eine Tür oder Fenster, zum Beispiel, oder das Gesims um die Oberkante eines Sockels oder entlang der Oberseite einer Innenwand. Ein einfaches Gesims kann nur mit einer Krone geformt werden. Die Funktion des vorspringenden Gesimses eines Gebäudes ist es, Regenwasser frei von den Wänden des Gebäudes zu werfen. In der Wohnbaupraxis wird diese Funktion durch vorspringende Giebelenden, Dachtraufe und Rinnen gehandhabt. Allerdings können Haustraufe auch "Gesimse" genannt werden, wenn sie mit dekorativem Formteil fertig sind. In diesem Sinne, während die meisten Gesimse auch Traufe sind, werden nicht alle Traufe gewöhnlich als Gesimse betrachtet. Die Traufe sind primär funktional und nicht notwendigerweise dekorativ, und ein Gesims hat einen dekorativen Aspekt. A cornice is generally any horizontal decorative molding that crowns a building or furniture element— the cornice over a door or window, for instance, or the cornice around the top edge of a pedestal or along the top of an interior wall. A simple cornice may be formed just with a crown molding. The function of the projecting cornice of a building is to throw rainwater free of the building’s walls. In residential building practice, this function is handled by projecting gable ends, roof eaves, and gutters. However, house eaves may also be called "cornices" if they are finished with decorative molding. In this sense, while most cornices are also eaves, not all eaves are usually considered cornices— eaves are primarily functional and not necessarily decorative, and a cornice has a decorative aspect to it. An example of a cornice, above large corbels, along the top of the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Building in downtown Wheeling, West Virginia.
