Derris
Derris ist eine kletternde Hülsenpflanze von Südostasien und den südwestlichen Pazifikinseln, einschließlich Neuguinea. Seine Wurzeln enthalten Rotenon, ein starkes Insektizid und Fischgift. Derris scandens in Hyderabad, Indien. Auch bekannt als derris Pulver und Tuba Wurzel, wurde es früher als organisches Insektizid verwendet, um Schädlinge auf Getreide wie Erbsen zu kontrollieren. Doch aufgrund von Studien, die ihre extreme Toxizität aufzeigen, sowie aufgrund des Konzentrationsniveaus von Rotenon, dem das Pulver oft verfeinert wird, sehen Experten in ökologischem und organischem Wachstum nicht mehr ökologisch an. Rotenone wird aber noch in den USA verkauft. Derris-Wurzel, wenn zerkleinert, gibt Rotenon frei. Einige gebürtige Einwohner von Fidschi und Neuguinea üben eine Form der Fischerei, in der sie die Wurzeln zermalmen und sie ins Wasser werfen. Der betäubte oder getötete Fisch schwimmt an die Oberfläche, wo sie leicht erreicht werden können. In Indonesien werden diese Wurzeln Tuba genannt. Trotz seiner Toxizität wird Derris als Lebensmittelpflanze von den Larven zahlreicher Lepidoptera-Arten einschließlich Batrachedra-Amydraula verwendet.
