Schlacke
Dross ist eine Masse von festen Verunreinigungen, die auf einem geschmolzenen Metall schwimmen oder in dem Metall dispergiert sind, wie in Schmiedeeisen. Es bildet sich auf der Oberfläche von niedrigschmelzenden Metallen wie Zinn, Blei, Zink oder Aluminium oder Legierungen durch Oxidation des Metalls. Mit Schmiedeeisen, hämmern und später rollen entfernt etwas Schlacke. Mit Zinn und Blei kann die Krätze durch Zugabe von Natriumhydroxidpellets, die die Oxide auflösen und eine Schlacke bilden, entfernt werden. Dross kann auch abgeräumt werden. Schlacke, als Feststoff, unterscheidet sich von Schlacke, die eine Flüssigkeit ist. Schlackenprodukt ist nicht ganz Abfallmaterial; Aluminium-Schlacke kann zum Beispiel recycelt werden und wird bei der Sekundärstahlherstellung zur Schlacken-Desoxidation eingesetzt.
