Gradient
In der Mathematik ist der Gradient eine Verallgemeinerung des üblichen Begriffs der Ableitung zu den Funktionen mehrerer Variablen. Ist f eine differenzierbare, skalarwertige Funktion mehrerer Variablen, so ist deren Gradient der Vektor, dessen Komponenten die n partiellen Ableitungen von f sind. Es ist also eine vektorwertige Funktion. Ähnlich wie bei der üblichen Ableitung repräsentiert der Gradient die Steigung der Tangente des Graphen der Funktion. Genauer gesagt sind die Gradientenpunkte in der Richtung der größten Rate der Zunahme der Funktion und ihrer Größe die Steigung des Graphen in dieser Richtung. Die Komponenten des Gradienten in Koordinaten sind die Koeffizienten der Variablen in der Gleichung des Tangentenraums zum Graphen. Diese charakterisierende Eigenschaft des Gradienten erlaubt es, unabhängig von einer Wahl des Koordinatensystems als ein Vektorfeld zu definieren, dessen Komponenten in einem Koordinatensystem sich von einem Koordinatensystem zu einem anderen verwandeln. Der Jakobier ist die Verallgemeinerung des Gradienten für vektorwertige Funktionen mehrerer Variablen und differenzierbarer Karten zwischen euklidischen Räumen oder allgemeiner Mannigfaltigkeiten.

Andere Definition von Gradient heißt auch: Grad. ein Maß für eine solche Neigung, insbesondere das Verhältnis der vertikalen Entfernung zwischen zwei Punkten auf der Neigung zu der horizontalen Entfernung zwischen ihnen. Der Gradient ist auch ein Maß für die Änderung einer physikalischen Größe, z. B. Temperatur oder elektrisches Potential, über eine bestimmte Entfernung.
