APS provoziert Blutgerinnsel in beiden Arterien und Venen sowie Schwangerschaft-Komplikationen wie Fehlgeburt, Totgeburt, Frühgeburt oder schwere Präeklampsie. Die diagnostischen Kriterien erfordern ein klinisches Ereignis, d.h. Thrombose oder Schwangerschaftskomplikation, und zwei positive Blutproben im Abstand von mindestens 3 Monaten auseinander. Diese Antikörper sind: Lupus-Antikoagulans, Anti-Cardiolipin und Anti-β2-Glycoprotein-I. Antiphospholipid-Syndrom kann primär oder sekundär sein. Primäres Antiphospholipid-Syndrom tritt in Abwesenheit einer anderen verwandten Krankheit auf. Sekundäres Antiphospholipid-Syndrom tritt bei anderen Autoimmunerkrankungen auf, wie z. B. systemischer Lupus erythematodes. In seltenen Fällen führt APS zu einer schnellen Organversagen aufgrund einer generalisierten Thrombose; Dies wird als "katastrophales Antiphospholipid-Syndrom" bezeichnet und ist mit einem hohen Risiko des Todes verbunden.

APS provokes blood clots in both arteries and veins as well as pregnancy-related complications such as miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm delivery, or severe preeclampsia. The diagnostic criteria requires one clinical event, i.e. thrombosis or pregnancy complication, and two positive blood tests spaced at least 3 months apart. These antibodies are: lupus anticoagulant, anti-cardiolipin and anti-β2-glycoprotein-I. Antiphospholipid syndrome can be primary or secondary. Primary antiphospholipid syndrome occurs in the absence of any other related disease. Secondary antiphospholipid syndrome occurs with other autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus. In rare cases, APS leads to rapid organ failure due to generalised thrombosis; this is termed "catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome" and is associated with a high risk of death.
