Internationales Geophysikalisches Jahr
Das Internationale Geophysikalische Jahr war ein internationales wissenschaftliches Projekt, das vom 1. Juli 1957 bis zum 31. Dezember 1958 dauerte. Es war das Ende einer langen Zeit im Kalten Krieg, als der wissenschaftliche Austausch zwischen Ost und West ernsthaft unterbrochen wurde. Joseph Stalins Tod im Jahre 1953 eröffnete den Weg für diese neue Ära der Zusammenarbeit. Siebenundsechzig Länder nahmen an IGY-Projekten teil, obwohl eine bemerkenswerte Ausnahme das Festland China war, das gegen die Teilnahme der Republik China protestierte. Ost und West vereinbart, den belgischen Marcel Nicolet als Generalsekretär der assoziierten internationalen Organisation zu nominieren. Die IGY umfasste elf Erdwissenschaften: Aurora und Airglow, kosmische Strahlen, Erdmagnetismus, Schwerkraft, Ionosphärenphysik, Längen- und Breitengradbestimmungen, Meteorologie, Ozeanographie, Seismologie und Sonnenaktivität. Sowohl die Sowjetunion als auch die USA starteten künstliche Satelliten für diese Veranstaltung; Die Sputnik 1 der Sowjetunion, die am 4. Oktober 1957 ins Leben gerufen wurde, war der erste erfolgreiche künstliche Satellit.
