Flechte
Eine Flechte ist ein zusammengesetzter Organismus, der aus einem Pilz und einem photosynthetischen Partner besteht, der in einer symbiotischen Beziehung zusammenwächst. Der photobiont ist meist entweder eine grüne Alge oder Cyanobacterium. Die Morphologie, Physiologie und Biochemie der Flechten unterscheiden sich sehr von denen des isolierten Pilzes und der Alge in der Kultur. Flechten treten in einigen der extremsten Umgebungen auf der Erde-arktischen Tundra, heiße Wüsten, felsige Küsten und giftige Schlackenhaufen auf. Allerdings sind sie auch als Epiphyten auf Blättern und Zweigen in Regenwäldern und gemäßigten Wäldern, auf nacktem Felsen, einschließlich Wänden und Grabsteinen, und auf exponierten Bodenoberflächen in sonst mesischen Lebensräumen reichlich vorhanden. Die Dächer vieler Bauten wachsen auf ihnen. Flechten sind weit verbreitet und können langlebig sein; Allerdings sind viele auch anfällig für Umweltstörungen und können für Wissenschaftler bei der Beurteilung der Auswirkungen von Luftverschmutzung, Ozonabbau und Metallverunreinigung nützlich sein. Flechten wurden bei der Herstellung von Farbstoffen und Parfums, sowie in traditionellen Medikamenten verwendet. Es wird geschätzt, dass 6% der Bodenfläche der Erde von Flechten bedeckt ist. In Schottland sind die farbstofferzeugenden Flechten als crottle bekannt.
