Malaria
Malaria ist eine moskitogetragene Infektionskrankheit von Menschen und anderen Tieren, die durch parasitäre Protozoen der Gattung Plasmodium verursacht werden. Häufig wird die Krankheit durch einen Biss von einer infizierten weiblichen Anopheles-Mücke übertragen, die die Organismen aus ihrem Speichel in das Kreislaufsystem einer Person einführt. Im Blut reisen die Parasiten zur Leber, um zu reifen und zu reproduzieren. Malaria verursacht Symptome, die typischerweise Fieber und Kopfschmerzen enthalten, die in schweren Fällen zu Koma oder Tod fortschreiten können. Fünf Arten von Plasmodium können infizieren und von Menschen übertragen werden. Die überwiegende Mehrheit der Todesfälle wird durch P. falciparum und P. vivax verursacht, während P. ovale und P. malariae eine allgemein mildere Form von Malaria verursachen, die selten tödlich ist. Die zoonotische Spezies P. knowlesi, die in Südostasien vorherrschen, verursachen Malaria in Makaken, können aber auch schwere Infektionen beim Menschen hervorrufen. Malaria ist in tropischen und subtropischen Regionen üblich, denn Niederschlag, warme Temperaturen und stagnierende Gewässer sorgen für eine Umgebung ideal für Moskitolarven.
