Marrekesh liegt nördlich der Ausläufer des schneebedeckten Atlasgebirges. Auf der Straße liegt Marrakesch 327 km südwestlich der marokkanischen Hauptstadt Rabat. Marrakesch ist das wichtigste von Marokkos vier ehemaligen Kaiserstädten. Die Region wurde von Berber Bauern aus neolithischen Zeiten bewohnt, aber die eigentliche Stadt wurde im Jahre 1062 von Abu Bakr ibn Umar, Häuptling und Cousine von Almoravid König Yusuf ibn Tashfin gegründet. Im 12. Jahrhundert bauten die Almoraviden in Marrakesch viele Madrasas und Moscheen, die andalusische Einflüsse tragen. Die roten Mauern der Stadt, die von Ali ibn Yusuf in 1122-1123 gebaut wurden, und verschiedene Gebäude, die in dieser Zeit in rotem Sandstein gebaut wurden, haben der Stadt den Spitznamen "Rote Stadt" oder "Ockerstadt" gegeben. Marrakesch wuchs rasch und etablierte sich als Kultur-, Religions- und Handelszentrum für Maghreb und Afrika südlich der Sahara; Jemaa el-Fnaa ist der belebteste Platz in Afrika.

Marrakesh or Marrakech is a major city in the northwest African country of Morocco. It is the third largest city in the country and is the capital of the mid-southwestern region of Marrakesh-Tensift-El Haouz. Marrekesh is located to the north of the foothills of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. By road, Marrakesh is located 327 km southwest of the Moroccan capital of Rabat. Marrakesh is the most important of Morocco's four former imperial cities. The region was inhabited by Berber farmers from Neolithic times, but the actual city was founded in 1062 by Abu Bakr ibn Umar, chieftain and cousin of Almoravid king Yusuf ibn Tashfin. In the 12th century, the Almoravids built many madrasas and mosques in Marrakesh that bear Andalusian influences. The red walls of the city, built by Ali ibn Yusuf in 1122-1123, and various buildings constructed in red sandstone during this period, have given the city the nickname of the "Red City" or "Ochre City". Marrakesh grew rapidly and established itself as a cultural, religious, and trading centre for the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa; Jemaa el-Fnaa is the busiest square in Africa.
