In der organischen Chemie ist ein Thiol eine Organoschwefelverbindung, die eine Kohlenstoff-gebundene Sulfhydrylgruppe enthält. Thiole sind das Schwefel-Analogon der Alkohole, und das Wort ist ein Portmanteau von "Thion" + "Alkohol", mit dem ersten Wort aus dem Griechischen θεῖον = "Schwefel". Die -SH-funktionelle Gruppe selbst wird entweder als Thiolgruppe oder als Sulfhydrylgruppe bezeichnet. Viele Thiole haben starke Gerüche, die denen von Knoblauch ähneln. Thiole werden als Geruchsstoffe verwendet, um bei der Erkennung von Erdgas zu helfen, und der "Geruch von Erdgas" ist auf den Geruch des Thiols zurückzuführen, der als das Geruch verwendet wird. Thiole werden oft als Mercaptane bezeichnet. Der Begriff mercaptan / mərkæptæn / stammt aus dem lateinischen mercurium captans, weil die thiolatgruppe so stark mit quecksilberverbindungen bindet. Thiole reagieren mit Quecksilber unter Bildung von Mercaptiden.
