Die meisten Tausendfüßler haben sehr langgestreckte zylindrische oder abgeflachte Körper mit mehr als 20 Segmenten, während Pillentipipedes kürzer sind und in einen Ball rollen können, wie ein Pillbug. Der Name "Tausendfüßler" ist ein zusammengesetztes Wort aus den lateinischen Wurzeln mille ("tausend") und pes ("Fuß"). Trotz ihres Namens hat kein bekannter Tausendfüßler 1.000 Beine, obwohl die seltene Art Illacme Plenipes bis zu 750. Häufige Arten haben zwischen 36 und 400 Beine. Es gibt etwa 12.000 benannte Arten in ca. 140 Familien. Die längste Art ist der riesige afrikanische Tausendfüßler (Archispirostreptus gigas). Die meisten Tausendfüßler sind langsam bewegte Detritivoren, essen verfallende Blätter und andere tote Pflanzenmaterie. Allerdings können sie auch kleinere Gartenschädlinge sein, vor allem in Gewächshäusern, wo sie schwere Schäden an emergenten Sämlingen verursachen können.
