Das Mitochondrion ist eine membrangebundene Organelle, die in den meisten eukaryotischen Zellen gefunden wird. Das Wort mitochondrion kommt aus dem griechischen μίτος, mitos, d.h. Diese Strukturen werden manchmal als "zelluläre Kraftwerke" bezeichnet, weil sie den Großteil der Zelle zur Zufuhr von Adenosintriphosphat erzeugen, die als Quelle für chemische Energie verwendet wird. Neben der Bereitstellung von zellulärer Energie sind Mitochondrien an anderen Aufgaben wie Signalisierung, Zelldifferenzierung, Zelltod sowie der Kontrolle des Zellzyklus und des Zellwachstums beteiligt. Mitochondrien wurden in mehrere menschliche Krankheiten, einschließlich mitochondrialen Störungen und Herzfunktionsstörungen verwickelt und können eine Rolle spielen im Alterungsprozess. Neuere Forschungen zeigen, dass Autismus, besonders schwerer Autismus, mit mitochondrialen Defekten korreliert ist. Mehrere Eigenschaften machen Mitochondrien einzigartig. Die Anzahl der Mitochondrien in einer Zelle variiert weitgehend durch Organismus und Gewebetyp. Viele Zellen haben nur eine einzige Mitochondrion, während andere mehrere tausend Mitochondrien enthalten können.
