Ruder
Ein Ruder ist ein Gerät für den wasserbasierten Antrieb. Ohren haben eine flache Klinge an einem Ende. Oarsmen fassen das Ruder am anderen Ende. Der Unterschied zwischen Rudern und Paddeln ist, dass Paddel vom Paddler gehalten werden und nicht mit dem Schiff verbunden sind. Die Ohren sind im allgemeinen mit dem Schiff verbunden, und zwar durch Reihenschloss oder Tholen, die die angelegte Kraft auf das Boot übertragen. In diesem System ist das Wasser der Drehpunkt. Oarsmen stehen gewöhnlich dem Heck des Schiffes gegenüber, reichen so weit wie möglich zum Heck und stecken die Klinge ihres Ruders ins Wasser. Als sie sich zurücklehnen, in Richtung des Schiffsbogens, kehrt die Klinge ihrer Ruder das Wasser zum Heck hinüber und schiebt den Schub - siehe Hebel. Seit Tausenden von Jahren wurden die Schiffe entweder durch Segel oder die mechanische Arbeit von Ruderern oder Paddlern angetrieben. Einige alte Schiffe wurden je nach Geschwindigkeit und Richtung des Windes entweder von Rudern oder Segeln angetrieben.
