Okapi
Die okapi / oʊkɑːpiː /, auch bekannt als Waldgiraffe oder Zebramiraffe, ist ein Giraffid-Artiodactyl-Säugetier, das im Ituri-Regenwald im Nordosten der Demokratischen Republik Kongo in Zentralafrika liegt. Obwohl die Okapi-gestreifte Markierungen an Zebras erinnern, ist sie am engsten mit der Giraffe verwandt. Die Okapi und die Giraffe sind die einzigen lebenden Mitglieder der Familie Giraffidae. Das Tier wurde durch die Spekulationen in seiner populären Presseberichterstattung über die Reisen von Henry Morton Stanley im Jahre 1887 zur prominenten europäischen Aufmerksamkeit gebracht. Die Reste einer Karkasse wurden später von dem englischen Abenteurer und dem Kolonialverwalter Harry Johnston nach London geschickt und zu einem Medienereignis 1901. Eine 2013 Studie bestimmt, dass es 10.000 Okapis in der Wildnis bleiben, von 40.000 vor einem Jahrzehnt. Im selben Jahr wurde der Okapi als gefährdete Art umgegliedert.
