Im Allgemeinen ist eine Meinung ein Urteil, ein Standpunkt oder eine Aussage über Angelegenheiten, die allgemein als subjektiv betrachtet werden, d.h. auf der Grundlage derjenigen, die weniger als absolut sicher ist, und ist das Ergebnis von Emotionen oder Interpretationen von Tatsachen. Was die Tatsache von der Meinung unterscheidet, ist, dass Tatsachen nachprüfbar sind, d.h. objektiv nachgewiesen werden kann. Ein Beispiel ist: "Amerika war in den Vietnamkrieg involviert" versus "Amerika war richtig, sich in den Vietnamkrieg zu engagieren". Eine Meinung kann durch Tatsachen unterstützt werden, in welchem Fall es ein Argument wird, obwohl die Menschen gegensätzliche Meinungen aus demselben Satz von Tatsachen ziehen können. Meinungen werden nur selten geändert, ohne dass neue Argumente vorgestellt werden. Es kann begründet werden, dass eine Meinung besser durch die Tatsachen als eine andere durch die Analyse der unterstützenden Argumente unterstützt wird. In der zufälligen Verwendung kann der Begriff Meinung das Ergebnis der Perspektive einer Person, des Verständnisses, der besonderen Gefühle, der Überzeugungen und der Wünsche sein. Es kann sich auf unbegründete Informationen beziehen, im Gegensatz zu Wissen und Tatsache. Kollektive oder berufliche Meinungen werden als Treffen eines höheren Standards definiert, um die Stellungnahme zu begründen.
