Präposition und Postposition
Präpositionen sind eine grammatisch unterschiedliche Wortklasse, deren zentralste Mitglieder charakteristisch räumliche oder zeitliche Beziehungen ausdrücken oder dazu dienen, verschiedene syntaktische Funktionen und semantische Rollen zu markieren. Da die primäre Funktion relational ist, verbindet sich eine Präposition typischerweise mit einem anderen Bestandteil, um eine Präpositionalphrase zu bilden, die das Komplement zu dem Kontext bezieht, in dem die Phrase auftritt. Das Wort Präposition kommt aus dem Lateinischen, eine Sprache, in der ein solches Wort gewöhnlich vor seinem Komplement platziert wird, also ist es "vorpositioniert". Englisch ist eine andere solche Sprache, obwohl es keine Voraussetzung dafür gibt, dass die Präposition einem Komplement vorangeht. In vielen Sprachen kommen die Worte mit dieser grammatischen Funktion nach, nicht vor dem Komplement. Solche Worte werden dann üblicherweise als Postpositionen bezeichnet. Ebenso bestehen die Umrisse aus zwei Teilen, die auf jeder Seite des Komplements erscheinen. Der Fachbegriff, der sich häufig auf Präpositionen, Postpositionen und Umrisse bezieht, ist Adposition. Einige Linguisten verwenden das Wort "Präposition" anstelle von "Adposition" für alle drei Fälle.
