Purdah
Purdah oder Pardah ist eine religiöse und soziale Praxis der weiblichen Abgeschiedenheit, die unter einigen muslimischen Gemeinschaften in Afghanistan, Pakistan und Nordindien vorherrschend ist. Einfacher ist es die Praxis, Männer daran zu hindern, Frauen zu sehen. Das ist zwei Formen: die physische Segregation der Geschlechter und die Forderung, dass Frauen ihre Körper abdecken, um ihre Haut zu bedecken und ihre Form zu verbergen. Die körperliche Segregation innerhalb eines Gebäudes wird mit einem vernünftigen Gebrauch von Wänden, Vorhängen und Bildschirmen erreicht. Der Abzug einer Frau in Purdah beschränkt in der Regel ihre persönlichen, sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Aktivitäten außerhalb ihres Hauses. Das übliche Purdah-Kleidungsstück ist ein Burka, was ein Yashmak sein kann oder auch nicht, ein Schleier, um das Gesicht zu verbergen. Die Augen können oder dürfen nicht ausgesetzt werden. Purdah wurde unter den Taliban in Afghanistan rigoros beobachtet, wo Frauen die ganze Purdah zu jeder Zeit beobachten mussten, als sie in der Öffentlichkeit waren. Nur schmale männliche Familienmitglieder und andere Frauen konnten sie aus purdah sehen. In anderen Gesellschaften wird Purdah oft nur in gewissen Zeiten religiöser Bedeutung praktiziert.
