Jean-Philippe Rameau
Jean-Philippe Rameau war einer der bedeutendsten französischen Komponisten und Musiktheoretiker der Barockzeit. Er ersetzte Jean-Baptiste Lully als den dominierenden Komponisten der französischen Oper und gilt auch als der führende französische Komponist für das Cembalo seiner Zeit neben François Couperin. Über Rameaus frühe Jahre ist wenig bekannt, und erst in den 1720er Jahren gewann er mit seiner Abhandlung über Harmonie den Ruhm als großen Theoretiker der Musik. Und auch in den folgenden Jahren als Komponist von Meisterwerken für das Cembalo, das europaweit zirkulierte. Er war fast 50 Jahre alt, bevor er sich auf die Opernkarriere bezog, auf der sein Ruf vor allem heute ruht. Sein Debüt, Hippolyte et Aricie, machte eine große Aufregung und wurde heftig für seine revolutionäre Verwendung von Harmonie von den Unterstützern von Lullys Stil der Musik angegriffen. Trotzdem wurde Rameaus Vorrang auf dem Gebiet der französischen Oper bald anerkannt, und er wurde später von denjenigen, die die italienische Oper während der Kontroverse, die als Querelle des Bouffons in den 1750er Jahren bekannt war, als "Heimat" Komponist angegriffen.
