Die Dehydrierung erzeugt signifikante Mengen an Nebenprodukt Wasserstoffgas, das in andere Raffinerieverfahren wie Hydrocracking eingespeist wird. Eine Nebenreaktion ist die Hydrogenolyse, die leichte Kohlenwasserstoffe mit niedrigerem Wert erzeugt, wie Methan, Ethan, Propan und Butane. Zusätzlich zu einem Benzin-Mischgut ist das Reformat die Hauptquelle für aromatische Massenchemikalien, die vielfältige Verwendungen haben, vor allem als Rohstoffe für Kunststoffe. Der Benzingehalt des Reformats macht ihn jedoch karzinogen, was zu einer regelmäßigen Begrenzung seiner Verwendung geführt hat. Eine weitere Verarbeitung ist erforderlich, um den Benzolgehalt zu reduzieren.

Catalytic reforming is a chemical process used to convert petroleum refinery naphthas distilled from crude oil, typically having low octane ratings, into high-octane liquid products called reformates, which are premium blending stocks for high-octane gasoline. The process converts low-octane linear hydrocarbons into high-octane branched alkanes and cyclic naphthenes, which are partially dehydrogenated into high-octane aromatic hydrocarbons. The dehydrogenation produces significant amounts of byproduct hydrogen gas, which is fed into other refinery processes such as hydrocracking. A side reaction is hydrogenolysis, which produces light hydrocarbons of lower value, such methane, ethane, propane, and butanes. In addition to a gasoline blending stock, reformate is the main source of aromatic bulk chemicals, which have diverse uses, most importantly as raw materials for plastics. However, the benzene content of reformate makes it carcinogenic, which has led to regulation effectively limiting its use as is; further processing is required to reduce the benzene content.
