Mitgefühl ist das Gefühl der Empathie für andere. Mitgefühl ist die Emotion, die wir als Reaktion auf das Leiden von anderen fühlen, die den Wunsch zu helfen motivieren. Die Etymologie des "Mitgefühls" ist lateinisch, was bedeutet "Mitleiden". Mehr beteiligt als einfache Einfühlungsvermögen, Mitgefühl führt gewöhnlich zu einem aktiven Wunsch, das Leiden eines anderen zu lindern. Mitleid ist oft, wenn auch nicht zwangsläufig, die Schlüsselkomponente in dem, was sich im sozialen Kontext als Altruismus manifestiert. In ethischer Hinsicht verkörpert die Ausdrücke im Zeitalter der sogenannten Goldenen Regel oftmals das Prinzip des Mitgefühls implizit: Tu anderen, was du für dich tun würdest. Das englische Substantiv-Mitgefühl, das heißt, zusammen zu lieben, kommt aus dem Lateinischen.
