Wahlrecht, politische Franchise oder einfach Franchise, unterscheidet sich von anderen Stimmrechten, ist das Recht auf Abstimmung durch den demokratischen Prozess gewonnen. Das Recht, für das Amt zu laufen, wird manchmal Kandidatenberechtigung genannt, und die Kombination beider Rechte wird manchmal als volles Wahlrecht bezeichnet. In vielen Sprachen wird das Stimmrecht als aktives Wahlrecht bezeichnet und das Recht auf Amtsantritt heißt das passive Wahlrecht. In englischer Sprache werden diese manchmal als aktives Wahlrecht und passives Wahlrecht bezeichnet. Das Wahlrecht wird oft in Bezug auf Wahlen für Vertreter konzipiert. Das Wahlrecht gilt gleichermaßen für Initiativen und Referenden. Das Wahlrecht beschreibt nicht nur das Stimmrecht, sondern auch die praktische Frage, ob eine Frage zur Abstimmung gestellt wird. Der Nutzen des Wahlrechts wird reduziert, wenn wichtige Fragen einseitig von gewählten oder nicht gewählten Vertretern entschieden werden.
