Wege zur Verringerung der negativen menschlichen Auswirkungen sind umweltfreundliche Chemieingenieurwesen, Umweltmanagement und Umweltschutz. Informationen werden aus der Grünchemie, der Erdwissenschaft, der Umweltwissenschaften und der Naturschutzbiologie gewonnen. Ökologische Ökonomie untersucht die Bereiche der akademischen Forschung, die auf die menschlichen Volkswirtschaften und die natürlichen Ökosysteme abzielen. Der Weg zur Nachhaltigkeit ist auch eine soziale Herausforderung, die internationales und nationales Recht, Stadtplanung und Verkehr, lokale und individuelle Lebensstile und ethischen Konsum beinhaltet.

Everything we think about regarding sustainability - from energy to agriculture to manufacturing to population - has a water footprint. Almost all of the water on Earth is salt water, and the remaining freshwater supplies are split between agricultural use and human use - as well as maintaining the existing natural environment.
