Dünner Film
Ein Dünnfilm ist eine Materialschicht, die von Bruchteilen einer Nanometer bis zu einigen Mikrometern Dicke reicht. Elektronische Halbleiterbauelemente und optische Beschichtungen sind die Hauptanwendungen, die von der Dünnschichtkonstruktion profitieren. Eine vertraute Anwendung von Dünnfilmen ist der Haushaltsspiegel, der typischerweise eine dünne Metallbeschichtung auf der Rückseite einer Glasscheibe aufweist, um eine reflektierende Grenzfläche zu bilden. Der Prozeß der Versilberung wurde einmal gewöhnlich verwendet, um Spiegel zu erzeugen. Zur Herstellung von Zwei-Wege-Spiegeln wird eine sehr dünne Folienbeschichtung verwendet. Die Leistungsfähigkeit optischer Beschichtungen wird typischerweise verstärkt, wenn die Dünnfilmbeschichtung aus mehreren Schichten mit unterschiedlichen Dicken und Brechungsindizes besteht. In ähnlicher Weise kann eine periodische Struktur von abwechselnden Dünnfilmen aus verschiedenen Materialien zusammen ein sogenanntes Übergitter bilden, das das Phänomen der Quanteneinschließung durch Beschränkung der elektronischen Phänomene auf zwei Dimensionen ausnutzt. Die Arbeit wird mit ferromagnetischen und ferroelektrischen Dünnfilmen zur Verwendung als Computerspeicher durchgeführt. Es wird auch auf Arzneimittel angewendet, über Dünnschicht-Arzneimittelabgabe. Dünnfilme werden zur Herstellung von Dünnfilm-Batterien verwendet.
