Die genaue Bedeutung der Universalisierbarkeit ist umstritten, aber die häufigste Interpretation ist, daß der kategorische Imperativ fragt, ob die Maxime deines Handelns eins werden könne, auf daß jeder unter ähnlichen Umständen handeln könne. Wenn die Aktion universalisiert werden könnte, dann ist es moralisch akzeptabel. Ansonsten ist es nicht Zum Beispiel kann man feststellen, ob eine Maxime des Lügens, ein Darlehen zu sichern, moralisch ist, indem man versucht, es zu verallgemeinern und die Gründe auf die Ergebnisse anzuwenden. Wenn alle gelogen würden, Kredite zu sichern, würden die Praktiken des Versprechens und der Verleihung auseinanderfallen, und die Maxime würde dann unmöglich werden. Kant nennt solche Handlungen Beispiele für einen Widerspruch in der Konzeption, der viel wie ein performativer Widerspruch ist, weil sie die Grundlage für ihre Existenz untergraben.
