In this function the augment is used in Greek, Armenian, Phrygian and in Indo-Russian languages ​​such as Sanskrit. Within Indo-European studies it is controversial whether the augment was developed within these branches of Indo-European or whether it existed already in the Indo-European language, but was later lost in all but the succeeding languages. The Augment is not used in all language classes to mark past performance. In Greek, e.g. Is not consistently present in Homer, and the exact reasons are still being discussed.

In der Sprachwissenschaft wird als Augment ein Präfix bezeichnet, das in einigen indogermanischen Sprachen einem Verb vorangestellt wird, um Zeitformen der Vergangenheit wie das Plusquamperfekt, das Imperfekt oder den Aorist zu bilden. Das Augment wird nicht in allen Sprachstufen durchgängig zur Markierung von Vergangenheitstempora verwendet. Im Griechischen kommt es z.B. bei Homer nicht beständig vor, die genauen Gründe werden bis heute diskutiert.
