Brackets are commonly used in orthodontic orthodontics for fixed appliances. They are glued to the surface of the tooth by special adhesive techniques and thus form a starting point for the movement of teeth in the case of fixed appliances. The device for receiving arches, the so-called lock or slot, is characteristic of a bracket. This is a horizontally extending slot. This is bounded upwards and downwards by the tips of a wing, which serve to attach the arch by means of ligatures. The standard bracket has two wings and is therefore called a twin bracket. Occasionally, brackets with only one wing are used, these are referred to as single brackets. According to the shape of the lock, brackets can be distinguished in Edgewise brackets, light-wire brackets and self-alloy brackets. The lock has a square cross section, which has either the dimensions .018 "x.025" or.022 "x.028". In the technical language one speaks of "zero-eighteen" and "zero-twenty-two" system.
