Chromoplast

Chromoplast

Chromoplasts are plastids which contain xanthophylls or carotenes and the plant parts in which they occur are colored yellow, orange or red. They do not carry out photosynthesis and are used to attract animals or originate from the aging process. Sometimes, however, they do not have any ecological benefits, such as the carrot, whose orange coloration can not attract an animal below ground. The chromoplasts are responsible for many flower colors as well as colors of some fruits or roots, as for example with the red or yellow pepper or the carrot. The chromoplasts of the petals and fruits can arise from leucoplasts or young chloroplasts. Like all plastids, they contain circular DNA in several copies and thus the complete plastom. In addition, they carry out specific synthesis work but do not have chlorophyll anymore and are therefore photosynthetically inactive. Apart from this, the chromoplasts of some plants also contain chlorophyll in small quantities. Chromoplasts, like the chloroplasts, are more soluble in fat than in water.
