The diamond turtle is a medium-sized water turtle from the family of the New World marsh turtles, which inhabits the coastal region of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to the north as far as Corpus Christi, Texas. In contrast to other turtles living in the water, either exclusively in fresh water or seawater, this species is adapted to live in salt marshes as well as river mouths and mangrove swamps and tolerates a fluctuating salt content of the surrounding water. The diamond turtle preferred brackish water but also occurs in freshwater or marine waters. As early as the 18th century, this species of tortoise was so abundant that it was a reasonably priced basic foodstuff in some coastal regions of the USA. Today, some of the seven subspecies are considered highly threatened. Apart from fishing, habitat losses have also contributed to the decline in fish stocks, as well as an increased imitation due to partially introduced gulls. Die Diamantschildkröte ist eine mittelgroße Wasserschildkröte aus der Familie der Neuwelt-Sumpfschildkröten, die in Nordamerika die Küstenregion von Cape Cod, Massachusetts, im Norden bis nach Corpus Christi, Texas, besiedelt. Anders als andere im Wasser lebende Schildkröten, die entweder ausschließlich in Süßwasser oder in Meereswasser vorkommen, ist diese Art an ein Leben in Salzmarschen sowie Flussmündungen und Mangrovensümpfen angepasst und toleriert einen schwankenden Salzgehalt des sie umgebenden Wassers. Die Diamantschildkröte bevorzugt Brackwasser, kommt jedoch auch in Süßwasser oder Meeresgewässern vor. Noch im 18. Jahrhundert war diese Schildkrötenart so zahlreich, dass sie in einigen Küstenregionen der USA ein preisgünstiges Grundnahrungsmittel war. Heute gelten einige der insgesamt sieben Unterarten als stark bedroht. Zu dem Bestandsrückgang haben neben der Fischerei unter anderem Habitatverluste sowie eine vermehrte Nachstellung durch zum Teil eingeführte Fressfeinde beigetragen.
