Meiosis, maturation, or reduction is a special form of the division of the nucleus of diploid cells, in which the number of chromosomes is halved, in contrast to the usual nuclear division, called mitosis, in that each daughter cell receives a homologous partner of a chromosome pair. This is the transition from the diploid to the haploid phase in the course of the nuclear phase change. This is usually accompanied by a recombination, a new composition of the parental chromosomes and usually also of chromosome sections. The meiosis is always carried out in two steps. As a rule, a cell division takes place after both division steps, which leads to the formation of four haploid daughter cells. Since these cell divisions are related to the meiotic nuclear divisions, both processes are also referred to collectively as meiosis. The halving of the ploidial wheel is a prerequisite for sexual reproduction, since otherwise the chromosome number would double with every generation.

Unter Meiose, Reifeteilung oder Reduktionsteilung versteht man eine besondere Form der Teilung des Zellkerns diploider Zellen, bei der im Unterschied zur gewöhnlichen Kernteilung, Mitose genannt, die Zahl der Chromosomen halbiert wird, indem jede Tochterzelle jeweils einen homologen Partner eines Chromosomenpaares erhält. Dies ist im Rahmen des Kernphasenwechsels der Übergang von der diploiden zur haploiden Phase. Damit einher geht gewöhnlich eine Rekombination, also eine neue Zusammenstellung der elterlichen Chromosomen und zumeist auch von Chromosomen-Abschnitten. Die Meiose vollzieht sich immer in zwei Teilungsschritten. In der Regel erfolgt nach beiden Teilungsschritten je eine Zellteilung, was zur Bildung von vier haploiden Tochterzellen führt. Da diese Zellteilungen mit den meiotischen Kernteilungen zusammenhängen, werden auch beide Vorgänge gemeinsam als Meiose bezeichnet. Die Halbierung des Ploidiegrads ist eine Voraussetzung für die geschlechtliche Fortpflanzung, da sich sonst die Chromosomenzahl mit jeder Generation verdoppeln würde.
