In ecology, especially in limnology, dystrophy refers to the water state of nutrient-poor, humane-acid-rich and lime-free waters, which are designated as dystrophic waters. Waters of this type are browned by the high proportion of dissolved humus substances and are also referred to as brown water lakes. This category mainly includes marshy waters and water bodies in hardy forests with a high proportion of trees, the humus substances come from the moorous environment of the waters. In dystrophic lakes there is very little phytoplankton, but they have a rich occurrence of zooplankton; Due to low-oxygen low water, soil fauna is also very poor in species. The typical sedimentary form of these waters is the Dy or peat sludge.

Dystrophie bezeichnet in der Ökologie, speziell in der Limnologie, den Wasserzustand nährstoffarmer, huminsäurereicher und kalkfreier Gewässer, die entsprechend als dystrophe Gewässer bezeichnet werden. Gewässer dieses Typs sind durch den hohen Anteil an gelösten Humussubstanzen braun gefärbt und werden entsprechend auch als Braunwasserseen bezeichnet. In diese Kategorie fallen vor allem Moorgewässer und Gewässer in Bruchwäldern mit einem hohen Laubwurfanteil, die Humussubstanzen stammen aus der moorreichen Umgebung der Gewässer. In dystrophen Seen ist nur sehr wenig Phytoplankton zu finden, allerdings verfügen sie über ein reiches Vorkommen von Zooplankton; aufgrund des sauerstoffarmen Tiefenwassers ist die Bodenfauna zudem sehr artenarm. Die typische Sedimentform dieser Gewässer ist der Dy bzw. Torfschlamm.
